How does the Bionic Ring count steps

The Bionic Ring uses a tiny sensor called an accelerometer to measure your steps. This sensor detects movement and changes in speed across three dimensions.

  • Detecting Motion: When you walk, your body—including your hand and finger where the ring is worn—moves in a distinct, repetitive pattern. The accelerometer picks up these characteristic jolts and swings.
  • Counting Steps: Sophisticated algorithms analyze the raw movement data to identify the signature pattern of a step, filtering out other hand movements like washing dishes or waving.
  • Calculating Total: The ring counts these recognized patterns as steps. This data is then synced wirelessly to a companion app on your smartphone, where you can view your daily step count and other activity metrics.

Because the ring uses hand movement to detect steps, its accuracy might be affected when using a walking cane, crutches or a mobility walker. The algorithm is designed to filter out everyday hand motions, but we haven't specifically tested it for this type of movement.
